I constantly battle between do I use Propellerhead Reason, Pro Tools, Cockos Reaper, Ableton Live, GarageBand or Logic (in no particular order)! I’ve used Reason for years but lately GarageBand, just does what you need and with an iPad as the mixing desk and the iMac as the main console, awesome combination. I do love Reason though and yes I do realise how more powerful most are compared to GarageBand but sometimes I just want to fire up a DAW and record. Using external hardware pedals/effects takes the pressure off the DAW too and gives more immediate control of the sound before it enters the DAW’s recording stage.
Which linux distro is the best? Well, that’s a big question as there are literally thousands of variations out there, I have personally tried loads of them, maybe thirty or more, some desktop, some servers and some dedicated web or mail servers. Running your own linux box is a fascinating and rewarding experience especially if you have built your own box then installed your own free linux distro. For desktop, there are the main players, Mint, Ubuntu, Debien etc. I vastly prefer Linux Mint any day, in my opinion it’s fast, hastle free installation, easy to use and sets up the drivers really well, leaving you to just use your new shiny desktop. DistroWatch is a really good place to start looking for your next free desktop or server. Oh, and not forgetting the all important point, Linux is FREE! Enjoy.
